Dear Young Hearts Member

You will remember that we wrote to you in October 2016 about the future of our charity explaining the need for Young Hearts to recruit ‘new blood’ via additional Committee members as some members of the committee were planning to stand down. We did recruit two new committee members but this was not enough to continue as some of the original long standing committee members have now resigned.

We were also concerned at the lack of new members joining Young Hearts over the last few years.

In summary

  • Young Hearts has been in existence for 14 years since it was founded by Kim Homewood and others in 2003 and has achieved a lot during this period raising considerable amounts of money to support members and their families. However, Young Hearts has a small and declining membership with very few new members in the last two years
  • Young Hearts campaigned hard to preserve children’s heart services in Oxford but it is nearly 8 years since surgical services temporarily closed in Oxford and moved to University Hospital, Southampton. The Southampton Surgical Service appears to be well regarded and providing good outcomes especially in recent years with the opening of more accommodation on site for parents in the new Ronald McDonald House.
  • Sadly, we have to accept that NHS England is most unlikely to re-open the question of Oxford providing surgical services for children at least in the short term so options for our parents to access paediatric cardiac surgical services will continue to be either at University Hospital Southampton, Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital and the Evelina Children’s Hospital I London.

On this basis we have agreed to wind up the charity on 30 September 2017 with the outstanding funds of circa £7,000 being transferred to the Samaritan Fund held by Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals Charitable Funds for Kathy Lurcook to access and provide support to local families on the same basis as before.

Please do not hesitate to contact Kathy if you need help / assistance towards travel or childcare costs etc

I am sorry that this means we will not be organising a Young Hearts Xmas Party in 2017 but on behalf of the Committee may I wish you a very happy Xmas and good health for you and your family in 2018.

Kind regards,
Caroline Langridge
Chairman
Young Hearts
